Dental Anesthesia – Before and After

With the innovation of anesthesia dentistry become completely painless.

Most dentist uses local anesthesia that numbs the particular area of oral cavity. It can be used in root canal treatment, dental implants fixation, gums surgery, extraction, dental trauma/accident , jaw fracture etc.

BEFORE:

1. Always have light meal or breakfast before dentist appointment (for general anesthesia patient need to avoid food or drink minimum 6 hours to procedure)

2. wear loose and comfortable cloths

3. Give medicine or medical disease history. Please inform Doctor if you take any blood thinners or medications for diabetes.

4. take prescribed medicine as it increases depth of analgesia

5. avoid alcohol, smoking

6. Please be prepared for your recovery. apply icing on face as explained for swelling control. Cotton gauze for gauze packs will be provided if necessary.

7. FOR FEMALE PATIENTS ONLY: If you are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding, please inform Dentist.

AFTER:

1. Numbness last for 3 to 4 hours after that patient may feel discomfort. It will be good idea to have analgesic before numbness goes

2. Don’t talk or eat till numbness is there, you may damage lips or cheek. You can take sip of water or juice

3. Resume tooth brushing with toothpaste the next day

4. Do gum massage in the area of root canal treated tooth
